Rotor Blades – Trends and developments for blade design and lightweight materialsRotor blades represent up to a quarter of the investment in a wind turbine. Improving the performance of the rotor is considered a very promising way to reduce the cost of energy from wind.
The race for ever bigger wind turbines, especially for the offshore market, is creating challenging impacts on the development of corresponding rotor blades. Advanced aerodynamic and structural designs, new or optimised materials as well as cost-effective manufacturing technologies are required to advance performance whilst coping with the severe pressure on cost control.
